For those who have been wanting to know the first church in Nigeria here is a post that gives you all you need to know about the first church ever in the country.

The first church in Nigeria is the Cathedral Church of St. Peter located in Ake, Abeokuta. The church is an Anglican Church which was founded by Reverend Andrew Desalu Wilhelm in the year 1898. In the early 1890’s the church served as a meeting base for other missionaries in the country.


Christianity was introduced into Nigeria when the early Portuguese missionaries visited the country in the sixteenth century. Although there have been a lot of argument about the first church in the country. Historical records points towards the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Ake, Abeokuta as the first in the country.

The old structure of the first church in the country has since been renovated to a bigger and more modern auditorium where various worship and service sessions are being held today. Though the edifice of the oldest church still stands intact within the premises and currently serves as a tourist site.
