Osun CP advocates promotion of cultural values to curb crime

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr Fimihan Adeoye has identified the need to promote cultural values as a basic mechanism to discourage criminality as he promised to champion advocacy for virtue in the state.

He said this during an interaction with newspapers’ reporters under the auspices of Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists who visited him in his office at the police headquarters in Osogbo, capital of Osun State at the weekend.

Adeoye lamented that cultural values have been eroded and decadence has permeated the society to the extent that people commit crime with impunity and criminality even appears like a good idea among the youths nowadays.

The CP said: “In the past, when people respect cultural values, nobody would want to be seen as a criminal and whoever that committed crime, then, would feel ashamed and show remorse”.

He continued: “But nowadays, a criminal doesn’t care and he could even be boasting because he doesn’t feel that he has done something bad. This trend is dangerous and we must reverse it by returning to our values and live with dignity”.

“In some communities, if someone commits crime, there is a way they would punish and tag that individual and no one in that community would be willing to relate or associate with that criminal again. In fact, no family would allow their daughter to marry such person”, he said.

Adeoye declared that he would embark on public enlightenment to sensitize people on the need to be morally upright and shun crime, saying this is the best way to curb crime in a democratic setting in which use of force is not encouraged because of the issue of human rights.

“We will sensitise members of the public on the actions that constitute offences and advise them on the need to respect the law. This will surely prevent many people from committing crime and it would reduce our headache”, Adeoye noted.

“We shall get closer to the people and build trust so as to enjoy their confidence. This is necessary because we need these people to be able to protect them, so that it would be the police of the people by the people and for the people.
